Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
The ICE Student Chapter at KIIT was established in 2014 and it conducts various interesting events for civil engineering students of the School.
The group aims to:
- Broaden and increase the knowledge and perspective of students by helping them learn about civil engineering around the world
- Help students engage with alumni, industry, government, and community partners through outreach activities, and give them an understanding of civil engineering around the world
- Build links with other institutions, organisations and learned societies
- Organise seminars, workshops, visits and inter-universities competitions and technical challenges based on a range of civil engineering projects
- Develop skills in leadership, teamwork, communication and ethics, to help students interact effectively

WEBINAR ON CAREER DEVELOPMENT
A Webinar Session on Career Development was organized by School of Civil Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University under Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Student Chapter on 9th May, 2020 under the guidance of Prof. B. G. Mohapatra, FIC, KIIT ICE Student Chapter.
The Webinar online session was hosted by Mr. Patrick Courtney, ICE International Membership Recruitment Manager, London in the presence of core KIIT ICE Student chapter members as Yash Raj, Subhamsish Sahoo, Utkarsh Tiwari, Shivanshi Trivedi, Harshit Kishlay, Ankit Singh and the President, Purnajit Bhowmik along with more than 50 nos. of ICE Members of School. Renowned members from various Industries such as Mr. Parthajit Patra (Independent Consultant in Kolkata); Mr. Kaushik Gangopadhyay(Civil Engineer in WSP, Noida); Mr. Anirudha Bose(Civil Engineer in Amec Foster Wheeler, Kolkata); Mr. Srirup Mitra(Civil Engineer in AECOM,Kolkata); Mr. Partha Roy(Civil Engineer in JACOBS, Kolkata); and Mr. Ayanangshu Dey(Independent Consultant in Kolkata) also joined the webinar as panel members.
Mr. Patrick welcomed the members and dignitaries and introduced the KIIT ICE student chapter to each and every esteemed personality present in the webinar. He discussed the opportunity about the different aspects of being an ICE member and how ICE is working relentlessly in providing its student members every possible opportunity to excel worldwide. The event focused on the Doubts and queries of the Student Members about their Career Development and the dynamics of being a Civil Engineer.
TECHNICAL SITE VISIT
Institution of Civil Engineers(ICE) along with ASCE and KSCE, student chapter, organized a technical site visit to Kalinga Institute of Medical Science’s under construction cancer hospital on 28/01/2020 (Tuesday) and 31/01/2020(Friday) at 3.00 pm. The site visit was guided by the faculties of the School of Civil Engineering. At the site, there were all the stages of the construction and the faculties explained each stage to the students. The site engineer also gave a brief description about the plan of the structure, the grouting and bar bending process. The students came across the practical application of the knowledge they gained in the classroom.
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) along with ASCE and KSCE, student chapter, organized a technical site visit in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on 7/12/2019 (Saturday). The site visit conducted under Prof. S. Moulick was to a 36 MLD Sewage Treatment plant. At the site students interacted with site in charge and other technical heads. The site in charge gave a brief introduction about the plants working process and its system to the students and then the plant was shown to them.
KIIT Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE) along with ASCE and ICE, student chapter, organized a technical site visit to Rudrapur, Cuttack, Odisha on 12/11/2019 (Tuesday) at 10 A.M. The site visit was guided by Prof. P.C.Saha (Faculty at School of Civil Engineering). The site had three different kinds of bridges and steel structure. Prof. P.C.Saha gave detailed information about these structures. The visit was very helpful for the students and they got some practical knowledge other than their usual curriculum. The site visit was attended by 55 students.
TECHNICAL TALK BY GUEST SPEAKERS
A technical talk on “Small Community Water and Wastewater Treatment” was organized by the school of Civil Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University under Institution of Civil Engineers(ICE) student chapter on 7th March 2020. (Dr.) B.G Mahapatra, Dean SCE, DU welcomed all the fifty five participants and drew the attention to the achievements and attainment of the University and its students. The event started with the felicitation of the Guest Speaker Dr. Achintya Bezbaruah from North Dakota University, USA by Prof. (Dr.) B.G Mahapatra, Dean SCE, DU . Dr. Achintya Bezbaruah shared his profuse experience to students who are keen to pursue higher studies as well as give their contribution in the research field. Dr. Bezbaruah started his address by informing about the Challenges and Opportunities that are present in the Treatment of wastewater as well as providing Clean and Drinkable water to the poor people of the Country.
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), KIIT student chapter had an interactive session with Mr. Amitabha Ghosal (CEAI President), ICE fellow member. He shared his experience with the students and gave a lecture on ‘Nature of failure in civil structures’, where he discussed about the rehabilitation of Bankim Setu, a bridge near Howrah station. He gave a brief description about the failure that occurred in the bridge and how a small mistake in design can lead to major destruction. The lack of knowledge and the negligence by the engineers cannot be accepted. He encouraged the students to be a proud civil engineer and how they can be self-sufficient in the future. He discussed about the changing trends in engineering and the aspects of quality control technology in the same field.
A technical talk on “Occupational Safety and Health” was organized by the school of Civil Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University under the Institute of Civil Engineers(ICE) student chapter on 18th September 2019. The event started with the felicitation of the Guest Speaker Dr. Krishna Nirmalya Sen and Mr. Vimal Samal from L&T, India by Prof. (Dr.) S. Moulick and Prof. (Dr.) Moharana. Dr Krishna Nirmalya Sen commenced his talk on the topic of safety. He quoted,” Safety and health are we all are aware of but we don’t take it seriously”. He explained how Safety plays an important role in our day to day life. He further shared his thoughts on the topic and enlighten us about the different safety procedures, changes in the situation and new equipment covering the safety of individuals in the workplace. He shared a presentation on-Safety Hazard in workplaces and explained how dangerous situations can be avoided with a little common sense and focus on the surroundings beside us. He finally introduced the topic “Swiss Cheese” which saw us the safety parameters and limitations in Industries. Finally, he ended his presentation as time was limited, followed by a series of questions. the session was very interactive as participants showed their interest in the topic. Lastly, Mr Sen and Mr Samal addressed the gathering about the potential in this sector in the industry. they are looking forward to the gathering, which will be held in the month of November.
A technical talk on “Awakening Giant: Nanotechnology for the masses” was organized by the school of Civil Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University under Institute of Civil Engineers(ICE) student chapter on 3rd August 2019. (Dr.) B.G Mahapatra, Dean SCE, DU welcomed all the ninety-six participants and drew the attention to the achievements and attainment of the University and its students. The event started with the felicitation of the Guest Speaker Dr.Achintya Bezbaruah from North Dakota University, USA . Prof Bezbaruah delivered a lecture on Nanotechnology and explained how Nanotechnology is nothing new rather it has been prevailing since the Ayurvedic Age. He further shared his thoughts on the topic and quoted,”Nano-technology will be the next revolution humans achieve”. He shared his on-going projects and emphasized that the aim is to attain sustainability and they are targeting relevant innovation. He illuminated a new project that his team is currently developing and its impact on the modern world. He discussed the problems faced in India, stating ⅕ of India’s current population is affected by arsenic. Dr.Achintya Bezbaruah concluded the talk by quoting Swami Vivekananda,” Take risks in life. If you win, you can lead. If you lose, you can guide”. Participants then asked a series of question to Dr.Achintya Bezbaruah.
NEWS FROM CHAPTER
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) conducted a meeting on 05/02/2020, 2 P.M. at conference hall (School of Civil Engineering) under Mr. Purnajit Bhowmik (President, ICE KIIT Student Chapter) with an aim to enroll the new members officially in ICE and targeting the importance of networking for the career options in modern scenario.
The ICE (Institution Of Civil Engineers) KIIT student chapter held a meeting for its members on the 2nd of November 2019 (Saturday) at 11 am in the civil department. In the meeting, individualized t-shirts with each member’s name on the back were distributed to all the newly recruited members of the society from the 2nd and 3rd years. The enthusiasm of members upon receiving the t-shirt was remarkable. As a society, ICE takes pride in maintaining a standard set of clothing worn by its members while participating in activities organized by it. This not only brings about a sense of commonality which develops between them but also depicts solidarity.
After an excellent session of technicality and rendezvous recorded last year, ICE, KIIT student chapter made up to the mark of taking its first step recruiting fresh souls for the year ahead. Newly elected president, Purnajit Bhowmik and vice president, Gyan Prakash initiated the recruitment drive dated 1 st August’19 on the campus itself. Together along with other active members of the society, the permission and promotion of the event proceeded with the support of our head faculty advisor and Dean of KIIT School of Civil Engineering Prof. Benu Gopal Mohapatra sir. A total of 76 candidates turned up for the drive having their own interests of domain (maximum 2). The recruitment drive was divided in 2 slots in the morning and evening half.
SOCIAL EVENTS
ICE, Student Chapter KIIT University conducted it’s first social event “SAARANG” on 24/09/2019 (Tuesday), 5:00 PM at B-block, School of Civil Engineering. This event was first of its kind in our department. It was an unique initiative taken by Director Dr. B.G. Mohapatra. The session was attended by the faculties and staff members of School . This cultural programme was very successful as students of other branches also attended the event. At the end of the event.
The word “SAARANG” means multicolored and like this the event had different performances from students. The event, “SAARANG” gave a great stage for the students of school of civil engineering to showcase their non-academic talents .
